Chapter Special Projects 2012

Alpha Chapter (Texas)

  • Will celebrate its 75th anniversary as founding chapter this summer at TBA
  • Signed on as a participant in the 75th anniversary commission consortium
  • Continued its Band Director Support Network which provides mentoring and free clinics to any band director in the state
  • Presented two clinics at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention
  • Presented both Outstanding Young Bandmaster and Outstanding Contributor awards
  • Welcomed ten new inductees to the Texas Bandmaster Hall of Fame
  • Provided a Phi Beta Mu Directors Reading Band for new music at TBA

Alpha Chi Chapter (Virginia)

  • Presented young band director forums for the youngest middle & high school band directors at our state music association conference in November utilizing our most veteran band directors as panel members to discuss issues facing them and their band programs. We will conduct such seminars throughout the state of Virginia in the coming year as a mentoring project.

Gamma Chapter (Indiana)

  • New Mentor Project

Iota Chapter (Kansas)

  • Iota PBM Future Band Director Scholarship
  • Participating in commissioned work for 40th Anniversary of the Kansas Bandmasters Association
  • Participating in commissioned work for PBM International

Lambda Chapter (Missouri)

  • Published the final hardback edition of The History of Missouri Bands by C. Herbert Duncan. It was made available to the public in March 2012. C. Herbert Duncan was invited to speak about the book at the Missouri Historical Society.
  • The Lambda website was launched on December 6, 2012.

Lambda Mu Chapter (Montana)

  • Working on a commission to celebrate the 30th anniversary in the fall of 2014. We have budgeted money for the project and are currently seeking and discussing parameters and possible composers.

Mu Alpha Chapter (Alberta)

  • Members have been unofficially taking instruments to music missions in Mexico and Dominica.
  • A scholarship is awarded to a student from Alberta to assist them in attending the National Youth Band of Canada.

Psi Chapter (Kentucky)

  • Commissioned work by composer David Gillingham

Tau Chapter (West Virginia)

  • Hosted its second annual Phi Beta Mu Directors’ Clinic. Morning pedagogy, methods and performance clinics were offered by current directors, studio teachers, college professors and retired directors from across the state. At the afternoon session, Gary Speck from Miami University of Ohio directed the Phi Beta Mu Directors’ Band through quality music for the high and middle school band. This event is offered to all directors, teachers and student educators in our state free of charge thanks to our local chapter and the generous sponsorship of music stores from around the state.

 Xi Chapter (Illinois)

  • Has signed on for the Camphouse commission relating to the 75th anniversary of Phi Beta Mu.
  • We also came to an agreement with the Illinois Music Educators Association and now co-sponsor a session at the state convention for music teachers.
  • This year PBM member William Koch will present data on Music Teacher Evaluation as it relates to the Illinois Performance Evaluation Reform Act.

Zeta Chapter (Georgia)

  •  Is in the early stages of a commission project. The Chapter would like to commission a Grade 4 work to be completed in 2014. A number of composers have been contacted to determine availability and projected completion time. Further discussion and composer selection process will take place at the January and March meetings respectively.
