Gary Wells
Alpha Chapter
2017 marks the 40th year of membership in Phi Beta Mu for Gary. He was inducted into the Omicron Chapter in Arkansas while serving as the band director at Hope High School. The Hope Band represented Arkansas at the Four States Bandmasters Association annual convention. During his tenure in Arkansas, he served as Secretary, Vice-President and President of the Arkansas Bandmasters Association and received the 1977 National ASBDA Medalist Stanbury Award.
Gary’s last 21 years were spent at Hamshire-Fannett High School near Beaumont. He built the small rural program from 18 members to over 110 by his retirement. The band was a consistent Sweepstakes winner and had numerous students named to the TMEA and ATSSB All State Bands.
Gary served Alpha Chapter in several capacities as Chairman of the Outstanding Contributor Committee, Chairman of the Program and Reception Committee and as a member of the Hall of Fame Committee. He has been Secretary-Treasurer of Alpha Chapter since 2001. He was named to the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 2013.
Gary is married to Judy and they have two children – Alex, the band director at Port Neches-Groves High School and Beth, who works in the neuro-monitoring medical field in Nashville, Tennessee.
