John Carroll
John Carroll serves as the Director of Bands at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas. Prior to joining Odessa College, he enjoyed a distinguished 46-year career as a Texas public school band director, serving in both small- and large-school settings.
Throughout his career, bands under Carroll’s direction earned numerous honors, including multiple Sweepstakes Awards at the Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL) level. He spent 27 years at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, where he served as Director of the Concert Band and Black Cat Jazz Ensemble, as well as percussion specialist. In 2017, he was selected as Permian High School’s Outstanding Master Teacher of the Year.
In 2018, Carroll was one of only three recipients statewide to receive the Texas Bandmasters Association Meritorious Achievement Award. He served as State Band Vice-President of the Texas Music Educators Association from 2018–2020 and as the association’s President from 2021–2022. He continues to contribute to music education by serving as a UIL concert and sight-reading adjudicator several times each year.
A graduate of Abilene Christian University and West Texas A&M University, Carroll has been an active member of the music education community for many years. He has been a member of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity—Alpha Chapter since 2003 and is also a member of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association.
In the summer of 2024, Carroll was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame, recognizing his outstanding contributions and longstanding service to music education and the band profession.
